Scherzo (1850)
from the String Quartet in F
Emilie Mayer (1812 – 1883)
SATB Saxophone Quartet
Scherzo by Emilie Mayer arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet. The String Quartet in F (ca. 1850), is a demonstration of Mayer’s mastery of the form. The light-hearted scherzo is the second movement. It is a very good fit for the saxophone quartet. There is an easy flow of melodies between the instruments. All the parts have a significant roll to play.
This arrangement of Scherzo is for SATB Saxophone Quartet. The scherzo is in the original key of F major. The tempo is a fast allegro throughout with no tempo changes. Performance time is about 6 minutes with all repeats. If no repeats are taken in the trio section, performance time is around 4.5 minutes. With a little work, a good high school quartet should find success with this piece.
- The range for each saxophone part is shown below.

Saxophone Range for Scherzo from the String Quartet in F
The soprano sax part extends into the lower altissimo range. The alto sax part is often quite high as well. Alternate notes are included in the parts for those wishing to avoid this.
