Tuba Mirum (1791)
from Requiem in D Minor, K. 626
W. A. Mozart (1756–1791)
Tenor Sax & Bari Sax Duet with Piano
Tuba Mirum by W. A. Mozart arranged for Tenor Sax & Bari Sax Duet with Piano. Tuba Mirum is part of the Dies Irae of the Requiem mass. It opens with a very famous trombone solo, here transcribed for the tenor saxophone. When the bass voice enters (here played by the baritone saxophone) the solo becomes an obbligato.
With this arrangement of Tuba Mirum you get:
- Piano score (9″ x 12″, 8 pages including cover) showing transposed saxophone parts
- Saxophone parts (9″ x 12″, 4 pages each, including covers):
- Tenor Sax
- Baritone Sax
A moderate tempo, limited range, and simple rhythms should make this an easy duet for rising intermediate players. Musically it is somewhat more challenging. It provides an excellent exercise in tone, dynamics, and balance for both saxophonists.
- The range for each saxophone part is shown below
- Audio and score excerpts are available above.
Saxophone Ranges for Tuba Mirum – Tenor and Bari Sax Duet with Piano
This piece is also available for Trombone and Euphonium Duet with piano. The brass duet parts may be played with the saxophone duet parts in any combination desired, so long as both parts are covered.
About the Composer
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791). Foundational composer of the classical period. He was working on the Requiem in D Minor at the time of his death. Mozart’s wife asked Franz Süssmayr to finish the piece shortly afterwards. Since that time, many others have stepped in to put the piece in playable form. Most of the articulations and dynamics in this arrangement are not included in the handwritten score but are taken from other editions that have become prominent over time.
