Tuba Mirum – Brass Duet w. Piano (1791)
from Requiem in D Minor, K. 626
W. A. Mozart (1756–1791)
Trombone and Euphonium or Baritone duet with piano
Tuba Mirum – Brass Duet w. Piano by W. A. Mozart arranged for Trombone and Euphonium or Baritone duet with piano. Tuba Mirum is part of the Dies Irae of the Requiem mass. The trombone solo that begins the Tuba Mirum is one of the most important solos for trombone in the orchestral literature. It appears on nearly every tenor trombone audition – whether for college or professional symphony orchestras. The euphonium, not used in the orchestral score, takes the part of the bass voice soloist.
Written in the last months of his life, Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor has achieved almost mythic status as one of classical music’s great works, despite the fact that Mozart did not live to see it to completion. His wife asked Franz Süssmayr to finish the piece shortly after the composer’s death. Since then, many others have stepped in to put the piece in playable form. Most of the articulations and dynamics in this arrangement are not included in the handwritten score but are taken from other editions that have become prominent over time.
With this arrangement of Tuba Mirum you get:
- Piano score (9″ x 12″, 8 pages including cover) showing trombone and euphonium duet parts
- Duet parts (9″ x 12″, 4 pages each, including covers):
- Part 1
- Trombone, bass clef or
- Trombone, tenor clef (not shown in score)
- Part 2
- Euphonium or
- Baritone T.C. (euphonium double – not shown in score)
- Part 1
A moderate tempo, and simple rhythms help to make this a successful duet for intermediate players. The trombone range is advanced. Stylistically it is somewhat more challenging. It provides an excellent exercise in tone, dynamics, and balance for both players. The trombone part is provided in both tenor clef and bass clef version.
- The range for each brass part is shown below
- Audio and score excerpts are available above.
