Allegretto and Minuet from Symphony No. 8 in F by Ludwig van Beethoven arranged for SAATB Saxophone Quintet. Beethoven’s 8th symphony is known for its quirky musical humor and cheerful outlook. Allegretto scherzando, the second movement of the symphony, with its ‘tick-tock’ accompaniment, has the lightness and grace of a ballet, though it comes to an abrupt end. The minuet that follows seems to be a throwback to earlier times but it is also full of high energy and musical jokes.
Saxophone quintet score (16 pages including cover, 9″ x 12″)
Parts (4 pages each, no cover, 9″ x 12″):
Allegretto and Minuet are in the original keys (allegretto: B flat, minuet: F). The time signature and note values of the allegretto have been expanded to 4/4 rather than the original 2/4 to simply rhythms. Both movements are an exercise in dynamic and rhythmic control with many sudden accents and dynamic changes. Grade 4.5 – 5 (moderately difficult to difficult). A challenge for intermediate players.
The soprano sax part reaches into the altissimo range 1 time. Alternate notes are provided in the part to avoid this. The soprano and alto sax 1 parts require good intonation and dexterity on the palm keys. The bari sax part frequently extends to low A. Alto 2 and Tenor remain in the ‘standard’ range throughout.
